What is Navratri?
Navratri ("nine nights") is one of the most important Hindu festivals, dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga and her nine forms (Navadurga). Celebrated twice a year — in Chaitra (spring) and Sharad (autumn) — the nine nights symbolize the triumph of good over evil.
The Nine Forms of Durga
- Day 1 — Shailaputri (Colour: Yellow) — Daughter of mountains, associated with nature
- Day 2 — Brahmacharini (Colour: Green) — Goddess of devotion and penance
- Day 3 — Chandraghanta (Colour: Grey) — Warrior goddess, symbolizing bravery
- Day 4 — Kushmanda (Colour: Orange) — Creator of the universe
- Day 5 — Skandamata (Colour: White) — Mother of Kartikeya
- Day 6 — Katyayani (Colour: Red) — Warrior form, destroyer of evil
- Day 7 — Kaalratri (Colour: Royal Blue) — Fiercest form, destroyer of darkness
- Day 8 — Mahagauri (Colour: Pink) — Goddess of beauty and peace
- Day 9 — Siddhidhatri (Colour: Purple) — Bestower of supernatural powers
Essential Navratri Pooja Samagri
- Durga Mata idol or photo
- Kalash with mango leaves and coconut
- Akhand Jyoti (continuous lamp)
- Red chunri/cloth for altar
- Kumkum, sindoor, haldi, akshat
- Nine types of grains (Navadhanya)
- Flowers — red and yellow preferred
- Camphor, agarbatti, dhoop
Daily Pooja Vidhi
Each morning, wake up early, take a bath, and begin your pooja during Brahma Muhurta. Light the Akhand Jyoti, offer fresh flowers, and chant the mantra specific to that day's goddess. In the evening, perform aarti and offer bhog (food). Wear the colour of the day to align with the divine energy.
Navratri Fasting Tips
- Consume sattvic food — fruits, milk, kuttu atta, sabudana
- Avoid onion, garlic, non-veg, and alcohol
- Use rock salt (sendha namak) instead of table salt
- Stay hydrated with water, coconut water, or buttermilk
