Satyanarayan Puja Vidhi: Complete Guide with Samagri List
What is Satyanarayan Puja?
Satyanarayan Puja is a Hindu worship ritual dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Satyanarayan form. Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi
1. Preparation and Sankalp
Clean the puja area. Spread a red cloth and place the idol or photo. Set up the kalash. Take sankalp (a solemn vow) by stating the purpose of the puja.
2. Ganesh Puja
Always begin by invoking Lord Ganesha. Offer modak or laddoo, apply kumkum, and chant "Om Gan Ganapataye Namah" 11 times.
3. Kalash Sthapana
Fill the brass kalash with water, place mango leaves, top with coconut. Tie a red thread (mauli) around it. This represents the divine presence.
4. Main Puja and Abhishek
Bathe the idol or photo with panchamrit. Offer flowers, akshat, kumkum, and haldi. Light the diya and agarbatti. Chant Vishnu mantras and offer each item with devotion.
5. Katha Paath (Story Reading)
Read or listen to the Satyanarayan Katha — five chapters describing how devotees were blessed by Lord Vishnu. This is the heart of the puja.
6. Aarti and Prasad
Perform aarti with camphor. Distribute sheera (semolina pudding with banana, dry fruits) as prasad. Share prasad with all present.
Sheera Prasad Recipe
Roast 1 cup suji (semolina) in 2 tbsp ghee until golden. Add 2 cups water, 3/4 cup sugar, and mashed banana. Cook until thick. Garnish with cardamom, cashews, and raisins.
Important Tips
- Perform the puja in the evening for best results
- All family members should participate
- Don't leave without eating the prasad — it's considered disrespectful
- Share prasad with neighbours and friends
- Keep a clean, positive mindset throughout
