Griha Pravesh Pooja: Complete Housewarming Ceremony Guide
What is Griha Pravesh?
Griha Pravesh (literally "entering the house") is one of the most important Hindu ceremonies performed when moving into a new home. It invokes divine blessings, removes negative energies, and ensures the home becomes a place of happiness, prosperity, and harmony.
Types of Griha Pravesh
- Apoorva — First time entering a newly built house
- Sapoorva — Re-entering a house after renovation or long absence
- Dwandwah — Returning home after a natural disaster or calamity
Choosing the Right Muhurat
Griha Pravesh must be performed on an auspicious day and time. Ideal months include Vaishakh, Jyeshtha, Magh, and Phalgun. Avoid Ashwin and Bhadrapada. Best nakshatras are Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, and Uttara Bhadrapada. Consult a pandit for the exact muhurat based on your horoscope.

- Agarbatti, dhoop, camphor
- Havan kund (fire pit) and havan samagri

Step-by-Step Griha Pravesh Procedure
1. Decorating the Entrance
Hang a toran (door hanging) made of mango leaves and marigold flowers. Draw a swastik with kumkum on both sides of the door. Place small rangoli at the entrance.
2. Ganesh Sthapana
Place a Ganesh idol at the entrance. Perform a brief Ganesh puja to remove obstacles. Break a coconut at the threshold.
3. First Entry with Kalash
The lady of the house enters first, carrying the kalash on her head. She should step over the threshold with her right foot first. The family follows behind.
4. Havan (Fire Ceremony)
Perform a Vastu shanti havan in the northeast corner. The sacred fire purifies the environment and invokes divine protection. Pour ahutis (offerings) of ghee, samagri, and grains.
5. Milk Boiling Ceremony
Boil milk in a new pot until it overflows. This symbolizes abundance and prosperity overflowing in the new home. The direction it overflows indicates auspiciousness.
6. Pooja and Prasad
Perform a full pooja in the home temple. Light the first diya in the pooja room. Distribute sweets to all guests and neighbours.
Vastu Tips for the New Home
- Place the pooja room in the northeast corner
- The main entrance should ideally face north or east
- Keep the centre of the home (Brahmasthan) open and clutter-free
- Avoid placing a mirror opposite the main door
- Keep the southeast corner clean for the kitchen
