Importance of a Home Mandir
A home mandir (temple) is more than furniture — it's a spiritual anchor. It creates a dedicated space for prayer, meditation, and family worship. A well-set-up mandir radiates positive energy throughout your home.
Choosing the Right Location (Vastu Tips)
- Best direction: Northeast (Ishan Kone) — the most auspicious corner
- Alternative: East or North-facing wall
- Avoid: Bedroom placement (unless unavoidable), under staircase, or bathroom-adjacent walls
- Height: Idols should be at eye level when seated for pooja
- Space: Allow room for sitting comfortably in front
Selecting the Right Mandir
Choose a mandir that fits your space and lifestyle:
- Wooden mandirs — Traditional, warm feel, available in sheesham, teak, or mango wood
- Marble mandirs — Elegant, easy to clean, perfect for larger spaces
- Wall-mounted mandirs — Space-saving, ideal for apartments
- Floor-standing mandirs — Full-size temple experience
Essential Items to Place
- Primary deity idol or photo (Ganesh, Lakshmi, Shiva, Krishna, etc.)
- Brass or silver diya
- Incense holder (agarbatti stand)
- Bell (ghanti)
- Small kalash
- Pooja thali with kumkum, haldi, akshat compartments
- Storage for camphor, cotton wicks, match box
Idol Placement Rules
- Ganesh should always be placed first (left side)
- Don't place idols facing each other or facing south
- Keep idols at the same height — don't stack them
- Maintain odd number of idols when possible (1, 3, 5)
- Framed photos can be placed above or behind idols
Daily Maintenance
Keep your mandir clean with daily wiping. Change flowers regularly. Clean brass and silver items weekly with natural solutions (lemon + salt for brass, baking soda paste for silver). Replace old, broken items respectfully by immersing them in a river or sea.
